Just behind the Carrel Refuge (4800m) is a large monument to liberator Simon Bolívar and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Humboldt’s party set a new world altitude record in 1802 and had the summit in sight when blood vessels in their eyes burst and a crevasse forced his party to retreat.
